Marine and Aquatic Recreation

Gold Coast students have a unique opportunity to experience a wide range of marine activities and to explore a diversity of marine environments. Students can, for example, scuba / snorkel at Cook Island or in the Gold Coast seaway amidst the coral and tropical fish of Wave Break Island, explore the mangrove communities of South Stradbroke Island or discover the coastal sand dune formations of the Southport Spit. Power boating, fishing (filleting and cooking) and sailing are pursued either at the school or in close proximity to the school.

This course aims to introduce students to a variety of marine activities and to develop the critical thinking skills necessary for them as adults to make informed decisions regarding the use and development of Gold Coast and other waterways. The building of positive attitudes towards the management of the marine environment will be a cornerstone of each student's introduction to Marine and Aquatic Practices.

Our Pathways:

The course consists of several units of work through which students will progress in the order shown in the Senior Handbook. Naturally there will be some practical components in the work covered, but the course also contains a good deal of theory. Students taking this subject should be comfortable with this idea and can expect examinations in both areas. Acceptance of involvement and continual study will depend on a student's ability to demonstrate that they can act safely and sensibly as the course contains elements of risk and components which, by law, must be performed in appropriate ways.
